Some (vegans) like it sweet - Forever Vegano, Mexico City

This trip to Mexico City, we were spoilt for choice when it came to finding veggie-friendly places to eat. We arrived in the capital late at night and luckily our hotel was only a 10 minute walk away from the Roma Norte branch of Forever Vegano, a vegan-only restaurant. It stands out for having one of the most eclectic and experimental menus of the restaurants we've eaten at in Mexico.

Forever Vegano sits on the corner of residential street in a beautiful colonial building, with an art nouveau font sign and leafy plants in the front. It was dimly lit with small tables, mirrors, comfy upholstered seating and lots of coloured cushions. It was quiet whilst we were there (probably because it was late), but had a relaxed and cosy vibe.

Spicy soup served in a large cup - warming from the ginger, creamy from the sweet potato. The tacos yacarnita pibil (usually made from slow-cooked pulled pork) were actually made from jackfruit and onions. It looked similar to the original Yucatan dish, but tasted sweeter and earthy from the achiote spice filling.

The most unusual thing on the menu is a serving of sweet potato fries but they come drizzled with a balsamic vinger dressing, dairy-free crema and fresh strawberries. A really creative combination but definitely one for those with a sweet tooth. Not sure that I'd order it again but we did finish off the whole plate!

We finished our meal off with a selection of loose leaf teas that Forever Vegano serves. Loved these cute leaf infusers which are made of silicon so you can stir with them. Try the unusual "chocolate tea" - you get the aroma of chocolate but the taste of tea which is quite odd!

There's also burgers, pizza, salads and other mains to try, as well as a long list of smoothies, drinks and desserts. Come to Forever Vegano if you're looking for something more creative to eat, but it'll suit those who like their savoury dishes a bit sweeter.
