A Piece of Cake! - Pan Comido, Mexico City

I love that the English language has so many idioms - it makes it so kooky and fun to learn. If you type Pan Comido into Google translate, "a piece of cake" or "easy peasy" come up - and boy was it was easy to order here as the whole menu is devoted to vegans and vegetarians!

We visited the branch in Roma Norte, which is cosy and decorated with vintage items. Think old picture frames, little glass bottles holding fresh flowers, squishy sofas. Our tabletop was made of a old wooden door - quirky and cute, but quite difficult to eat off as it wasn't level! The menu itself is well labelled and has tons of choice for brunch, lunch and dinner. Dishes are quirkily named after supposedly famous vegans or vegetarians, like Leonardo Da Vinci and Uma Thurman!

Hubby was feeling a bit unwell so opted for the spicy pozole. Pozole is a traditional stew/soup found in Mexico, which usually uses pork, onions and chillies. We walked past lots of street sellers stirring huge metal pots of aromatic pozole, but we couldn't try it! So we were delighted to find this vegan-friendly version had beans and corn, with extras like red onions and dried herbs to add to the stew. It was pretty spicy, and hubby slurped it all down with gusto!

I had the deep-fried flautas filled with beans and veg. I loved the contrast of the crispy tortillas with a fresh salad and lots of creamy ripe avocado. But my favourite dish was vegan mac'n'cheese. Now I love cheese and have been sceptical about non-dairy alternatives in the past but close your eyes, taste a spoonful of this and you would never be able to tell that it was vegan. It was comforting, warm and really indulgent for such a humble dish.

There's a range of burgers, wraps and other Mexican dishes to try too. A good place to try if you're in the area, for a casual and simple meal with plenty of choice.
