Vegans rejoice! - Casa Quimera, Mexico City

Our second visit to Mexico City has been an amazing adventure of art, architecture and food. And Casa Quimera, a 20th century mansion in residential Colonia Roma, combined all 3 in the most elegant, interesting and tasty way. It's a beautiful colonial building which has different small vegan restaurants on the ground floor and the courtyards around it, with art exhibitions on the top floor.

You can buy food from any of the eateries and they'll serve it to your table. We ate in the courtyard where there are lots of little tables with parasols to shield you from the sun, then the outdoor heaters and paper lanterns switch on when it gets dark. It has a relaxed informal vibe, perfect for a leisurely lunch which then leads to evening drinks.

Our favourite eatery was Vegan Planet - tons of choice, large portions and tasty food. If you fancy something hot, then choose from pizza, burgers, burritos and traditional Mexico dishes using vegan ingredients. It was such a hot day that we tucked into a huge buddha bowl - the Santa Fe bowl was particularly good, with fresh veg, a generous side of flavoursome quinoa, beans, avocado and crisp tortillas drizzled in a creamy (dairy-free) sauce.

Don't leave without trying Vegan Planet's raw Mousseacate - it is hands down the BEST dessert we had in Mexico. Think thick creamy mousse made of avocado flavoured with dark chocolate, vanilla and agave honey. It's so rich that you would never be able to tell it's dairy-free. Add bananas, fresh berries, cacao nibs and you have one helluva end to your meal despite it looking deceptively simple in a plastic cup! It's definitely inspired me to try to make an avocado-based pudding at home but not sure I'll be able to make it as tasty!

La Pitahaya Vegana is directly opposite Vegan Planet, and serves creative Mexican vegan food. It's known for it's distinctive bright pink tacos which add a pop of colour to your meal. We tried the Gringa special - a thin crispy pancake filled with spiced seitan, vegan cheese and pineapple, topped with fresh coriander and pickled red onion. It was a tasty, light dish but more expensive than other similar dishes we've had throughout Mexico.

There's also V-Ramen if you're in the mood for Japanese food and large pots of soothing jasmine tea. Next door Glam Foods sells a range of drinks and gourmet delicatessen items and opposite there's an organic vegan bakery called Milkella.

I have never been to a place where there is are so many different vegan dishes under one roof, making it easy to pick and choose what you would like to sample. Can't recommend it highly enough for vegans and carnivores alike, especially that Mousseacate from Vegan Planet.
